The >MTH headquarters is situated in a beautiful 18th Century building at the foot of Table Mountain in the Mother City. This one of a kind creative space is a heritage site, with iconic architecture that echoes what the artists create with their tattoos. The varied textures, mosaics and craftsmanship are a reflection of the diverse artistic personalities and identities of each of the artists. The team is steadily growing, with each artist pushing themselves and each other in the same direction and their dedication to education and self-improvement is matched by their professionalism and honesty. The artists have the unique opportunity to be in a creative environment where they can learn, grow and advance their career at an accelerated rate.
The word “hype”, best describes excessive or exaggerated claims. At times these claims can be misleading or portrayed as a form of deception. This “hype”, in a desperate attempt, tries to get people to buy into the buzz that’s created, instead of focussing on the actual substance or quality of the craft, artist or skill being promoted. Being More than Hype (>MTH) means that we focus on honest expression, quality, pushing true skills and artist’s as well as overall dopeness, which takes years of dedication and passion to cultivate. We break the mould of the “modern” trend that lends itself to pushing hype gimmicks and false reputations. Our aim is to align ourselves as artists and individuals who have a genuine passion and dedication in the pursuit of mastering our craft and our lives. With this attitude and philosophy at the core of what we do, anyone living in true pursuit can be considered to be More than Hype. Essentially, >MTH can be translated as “real recognises real".
Founding members Warren Petersen and Henry Barends are both deeply passionate and dedicated individual’s from extremely humble backgrounds that have found their identity in various street cultures and scenes. Tattooing is an expression of this identity and this is what created their bond and ultimately their passion and frustration with all the “hype” in modern society. It is in this pursuit of dopeness, that the >MTH philosophy was founded. With both of them being true admirers of tattooing, tattoo inspired art and culture, they have dedicated their lives to it and this is at the core of >MTH’s> DNA. It always has and always will drive all of their creative direction which has already manifested itself in the form of exhibitions and events, showcasing some of the world’s finest DJ’s and apparel. Warren Petersen has since moved on to pursue his solo art career, while Henry Barends remains focused on driving the More than Hype ethos.
As a whole, the collective is drawn to the idea that art and expression, in all forms, should be promoted and showcased to encourage interaction, education and growth. They have humbled themselves by bringing together like-minded creatives and seek to inspire and cultivate local artists and collectors, ultimately exposing them to individuals on the same wavelength, across the globe.
